"Hello, How Are You?" is how I welcome all the visitors to The Dutch Lady, my home design boutique in Washington, D.C.'s Shops at Georgetown Park. I wish to extend the same greeting to you, and thank you for taking time to visit my "virtual" shop.
My name is Nakita, and I am "The Dutch Lady". I was born in South Limburg, The Netherlands and raised in Maastricht, Holland, the home of the European Congress. I spent several years in Bruge, Belgium, learning about lace and textiles from many of Europe's finest artisans. I opened by shop, Nakita's Stickereien, in Heidelberg, Germany nearly ten years ago. People from around the world came to the shop everyday. Although I closed the shop in November, 2003 and moved to Washington, D.C., I knew I wanted to open a new shop in my new country, and opened The Dutch Lady this Spring. And once again, people from around the world are visiting, many having shopped at my store in Heidelberg.
No matter where I am, two things have always remained the same. I love meet people and talk with them about linens, textiles, antiques and handicrafts, and I love to embroider. I started embroidering when I was seven, and now, 35 years later, continue to enjoy sewing, stitching and embroidering. In fact, if you visit the shop, most days, you will find me making napkins, coasters, bookmarks, and lavender bags.
As you walk through my virtual store, you will see all sizes displayed in both inches and centimeters. When you are thinking of a new tablecloth, table runner, placemat or other item, think of the textile as an accent piece in a room, not as the focus of the room. Small square tablecloths look wonderful on oval tables, while an oval table runner can add to the beauty of a rectangular end table. Many of my designs are open patterns, allowing a table's natural beauty to show through. By simply changing the color underneath the accent piece, you can change with the season's…a green for Summer, perhaps gold for Autumn, and any color you chose for the Winter's Holidays.
With time being so precious, many people feel they can not enjoy traditional linens and textiles. I have adapted many of my decorative designs to today's fast paced lifestyle, with most of my hand-embroidered patterns available on cotton, cotton-linen blends, and polyacrylic fabrics which are washable and easy to care for. Many people tell me "oh, it is so pretty, but I am afraid I might spill something on it" or "I hate to iron". I want to share a few thoughts with you. We all deserve a little elegance in our life, and tablecloths, napkins, coasters and other items are made to be used, and if you spill something on them, remember "Oxi-Clean Does Work". Colors do not run with Oxi-Clean. Do not use bleach to care for fine textiles. Ironing is also easy. just remember things iron better if they are a wet. If you don't have time to iron things when they come from the washer, just place them in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. Spray starch adds a wonderful crispness to a dinner napkin, and polyacrylic fabrics rarely need to be ironed.
Again, thank you for taking the time to visit my shop and hope your shopping experience is a most pleasant one.
